Akio Hayashi is the Japanese designer and founder of Wabi Sabi Timepieces, the brand’s creative soul and guiding philosophy.
Born in Kyoto in 1959, Hayashi grew up between two worlds — the precision of his father’s temple clocks and the graceful imperfection of his mother’s calligraphy. Those influences shaped his belief that time itself is an art form, not something to control but something to appreciate.
After studying industrial design in Tokyo, Hayashi spent years in Japan’s watch industry before founding Wabi Sabi Timepieces in 2003. His goal was to create watches that age beautifully, embodying the Japanese ideal of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity.
